Bo Pelini's revised contract.

  • • On Brion Carnes and whether he should have played more, whether he's a threat to push Martinez:

"Brion got better as the season went on, and I think that with this spring, it's going to be good competition," Pelini said. "There were a couple of games where I thought we should have gotten him in at the end. But it's not because he can't play. There are some things he does really, really well.

"I think this offseason is big for him. He was a young guy trying to learn the offense last year. I think it's about his overall grasp of the offense. Once he becomes totally confident in what he's being asked to do, you're going to see his athletic ability come out."

Im looking forward to this spring football and the competition thats about to happen..

  • This is as positive as I have heard Bo relative Brion. Don't want get my hopes up but would be great to see a true qb competition.

    AmesHusker

  • A new offensive coordinator and a young QB at the same time plus a new conference. I don't see why anyone would have asked for that scenario last year. Good to see the competition will be open now however.

it does sound like Brion will be given every chance to win the job.

Doesn't mean he will, but he's going to get the shot.

Adams, you must have your red blinders on.

    I finally read the article

You should have posted these quotes instead.

Pelini and I disagreed on two issues with his quarterback. He called Martinez "a young guy."

"I think he grew a lot from his first year to his second. If we get that same growth this year, we should be able to double or triple what we do."

Yeah, that bit was more striking to me than the quotes on Carnes.

I agree with Pelini that Martinez is young, but only in a numbers sense. Sure, he wasn't a Junior or Senior this past season. But he had more starting experience than some guys who earn their starting job the first time in their Junior or Senior year.

On one hand, I try not to compare him to upperclassmen quarterbacks. But on the other hand, he's got as many or more snaps than plenty of guys.

I'm sorry, but calling Martinez young is almost laughable. He's was 21 last season for crying out loud. He'll be 22 next season are we going to be talking about his potential as a seasoned 23 year old 5th year Senior next fall when he's making the same mistakes as he did when he was a Freshman and Sophomore?

If things stay the same then Bo will not allow the QB starter to change, but if Bo is true to his word then we could see fireworks this upcoming Spring and Summer. Competition is a good thing so if Brion gets to really challenge T-mart for the starting QB position it will be a good thing for our huskers. I figure it will turn out one of two ways; one way is for Brion to win and become the starting QB or the other way is for the competition to finally kick start T-mart and turn him into the kind of QB we know he can be. Either way we win.

The problem I have with those "growth statements" is that there was only a marginal improvement in the offense as a whole, even with TM's personal improvement.

TM seemed to be more of a field general, who looked more in charge and making his pre-snap reads correctly. At the same time, there's a side of me who wants to say....."So what?"

As an offensive unit, we weren't that dynamic. We had a meat and potatoes running game and a short to middling passing game. Our ability to score points waned considerably down the stretch. In short, whatever it was TM was better at didn't lead to tangible results. Other players were a factor of course, but when I hear Bo speak this way about TM, you would think we had a juggernaut offense as a result, and we weren't even close.

At some point in time, Bo needs to assess what the ceiling is with TM in terms of basic quarterbacking skills. TM could be a mastermind of the Tim Beck offense, but if he doesn't improve on a number of shortcomings, the tangible results for the offense will be negligible.

As far as a true competition goes, I really don't see it happening. Besides, unseating a two year starter is going to be damn difficult. Carnes or whomever would have to look dramatically better than TM in practice, in order for Bo to make a switch. Carnes could go out there and look every bit as good as TM in Spring and Fall practice, but TM has the trump card of 25 games of experience.

BC would have to totally blow away TM on the practice field, and I doubt that happens.

  • I would argue that Taylor does not have 25 games of experience. With him it seems to be more like 1 games experience 25 times.

We all have eyes. We all see the product that we put on the field at QB. I can't see any situation where a QB in the spring and or the fall doesn't look better than TM. In fact, I would wager that more than one (Carnes and Kellog) will look better and outperform Taylor in the spring and fall.

This doesn't mean we will see a QB change. In fact, it kinda proves we won't. Carnes and Kellog both looked better last year, when a new offense was being installed, thus giving each QB equal ground to stand on. New offense for all so they would have all been starting from scratch. The play of the QB's didn't matter then, it sure isn't going to matter now.

Read Shatel's article. There are a few nice excerpts about Brion and next year that got some people all excited, but read further. There are some very telling quotes in there that basically say that TM already has the job.

My favorite part of the article is when Bo defines insanity, saying that "insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting to get different results."

would you not say that our QB situation is the definition of insanity?

That first line of yours is a classic. Save that one for posterity!

That TM "has the job" as of now is a given. It's his to lose. What will be interesting to note is how much of a real competition it seems to be (or we are told it is) as Spring and Fall practices unfold. I can certainly see a more poised and confident Carnes out playing TM, because IMO, he's simply a better QB talent with a higher ceiling. The question is, just how much better would Carnes have to be for Bo to decide to make a change.

To borrow from Bo's lexicon, BC would have to be "light years" better, and I doubt it plays out that way. TM would have to sense he is getting beat out and fall off the pace himself, and I doubt he does that.

  • I want to believe Bo. But Bo's actions speak louder than his intentions. But from the article, Bo is certainly getting heat for somebody about his Head Coaching. Hopefully, there is someone holding Bo accountable and they are following up on Bo actions. Given Bo's last couple of years coaching, osu's new coach, and Bo's $3M salary, its interesting that Bo now proclaims his love for NU and the job is a final destination.
