Just to be clear about the possibility of firing Bo stuff. People keep saying that our expectations are unrealistic and look how long it took Tom to win a national championship etc
I dont see anyone posting about how we should be winning national championships. I think most (not all) of the expectations around the program are realistic especially since we left a better football conference to one that is not as good.
Expectations of where i think most fans are at (could be wrong) 1. dont get freaking embarrassed on national tv repeatedly- this has happened 4 times in a year (minimum) 2. beat somebody you shouldnt sometimes (not all0 3. win a conference championship every now and then 4. go to a BCS game every now and then which means win 10 regular season games 5. improve recruiting
if you look at these expectations basically it is V Tech light. i think that is very reasonable and attainable. if we dont think that- then i would say fire bo get whoever and pay him less.

Meyer took the Utah job 12 days after Frank got fired for a paltry $400k a year, so he wasn't asking for big money there. Maybe he was trying to bilk Nebraska for the bigger bucks, but he apparently changed his tune with Utah. He also visited the city and school prior to taking the job. I don't recall him ever being seen in Lincoln, but hey, I was in Denver at the time
BTW, he was there two years. He didn't go to Florida until 2005.
SP had to be certifiable if he thought he was going to mandate who was on the new coaches staff. He had to know better than that, but then maybe not. My view from the cheap seats is that if "ego" had anything to do with anything, it stemmed from SP firing a coach designated by TO who had a solid W/L record. That alone probably spooked a lot of candidates on who they would be dealing with at Nebraska. So, I can buy ego as part of the problem for SP, but I'm still pretty "iffy" on how "interested" some of those candidates were. Inquiring about a job is one thing, true interest is another.
BTW, I was at work last night knocking out a post on this thread during a break in our communications room. A young guy came by and saw over my shoulder that I was on 247. He asked me if I was Big Red Phoenix! Close, but not quite. I was responding to one of your posts. I believe he said he was huskersrule. I didn't say who I was. Gotta maintain that lack of identity, although if he reads this post, I guess he'll have me pegged.
Thought you might find that interesting.
Regards..

I think this is a very good post. There are challenges when you are located in a state not full of the home grown talent required begging to come to your school. OSU, Texas, Florida don't have these challenges so just about any hired gun can walk in there and be fine. Much more important than the big name is finding a coach that knows your school and the challenges of the job. 2nd time around Michigan did exactly what I'm mentioning but first they went for the big name and got smoked because Rich Rod did not know the place. He did not know that we have to recruit Ohio and Pennsylvania hard. He brought in a bunch of undersized speedy slot receivers without bringing in linemen and promptly got us run over by just about every school in the Big. Brady Hoke wasn't the big name but he had a solid track record of sucess everywhere he coached and knew the place and the job. On top of that the Michigan job was "the job" to him. When it comes to where jobs are rated by the hired guns Texas, Ohio State, Florida are better than we are because talent is always a given. We may not like that but it is how they view it. The best guy for the job there is one that knows the place and wants to retire there. Nebraska with the fans, resources, and facilities does have alot going for it. A guy who loves the place and the job can do something with that. If what you guys say about Pelini doing things like interviewing for other jobs is true then Bo is not your guy. The right guy would only want to be there in Lincoln winning there.

Your memory is fading again. Urb coached at Utah in '03 and '04. He won the MWC coach of the year and Sporting News Coach of the Year his first season there. That was when he started to become THE hot young coaching prospect. He elected to stay at Utah for 2004, Callahan's first year at Nebraska, for one more season, then got his big gig at Florida in 2005 after going undefeated.
I don't want to make Pedey look TOO bad (ok, you're right, I don't really care), but he wanted sign off on Meyer's choices, I don't believe he wanted to actually help choose any of them. Urb was going to be his big splash hire that he kept hinting at. And it would have been if he wouldn't have F'd it up. Then it just became a Keystone Kaper after that. And you're right, his then very public ego issues didn't help his chances with finding prospects as the search went on. Freak.
I didn't even know rule was still on here! I see the PM now, good thing he said something. That's scary for you that he knows what you look like now.

Stop it , BRP, you're killin' me!!
Thought I was fairly alert, but after debating stuff based on dates and timelines with you, I feel like I'm ready for the Memory Loss Clinic. I better stick to philosophical discussions. Sequencing events from 10 years ago isn't going too well.
Gotta admit, that the more you go over this stuff, the more pissed off you get about SP. Don't know how Meyer would have worked out over time, but to think we ended up with Callahan when we might have had Urban is kind of mind boggling.
So I guess the big question going forward is "is Eichorst as ego-maniacal as Pedersen?"
Let's hope not.
