Bo Pelini Chatter

    There is a lot of talk on Bo leaving and/or getting fired... Here is my twocents... take it or leave it just wanted to vent and discuss it fully...

    I am not ready to say goodbye to Bo...

    Firstly, Bo needs to be given a break... or at least given more realistic expectations...

    He was hired to a losing record team... no matter if you want to say "we had the athletes" or not, the fact of the matter is we still were a losing record team. plainly stated. he took is to 8-4... Immediately...

    Everyone says "this is year 5, no excuse"... this is by far my least favorite point anyone ever makes... The reason is Bo's first class was not riddled with big names or large talent... he was scrambling to sign pretty much anyone after Nebraska just ended a joke of a season and a complete clean house of a coaching staff (besides Watson) ... Even Bo's second class was not that great, recruiting really started for us in 2010 and perhaps even more accurate to say it did in 2011 (even in 2011 we have lost 3 of our big time guys Klachko, Moore, Green... whos fault is that? who knows but without fact I am not blaming Bo). So if you truly want to see what he can do with "his recruits" at least give him another year or honestly even two... i can not imagine it was easy to recruit here after the Callahan years...

    Secondly, who would replace him?
    Paul Rhodes... he is being celebrated for getting to a bowl game at 6-6... yes he is at ISU and is doing a great job there but frankly... I'll pass... IMO that would be like pressing a reset button for me... not ready to reset and start over... Originally i planned on touching on a few coaches but i changed my mind. too many names to key in on ... just straight forward i have seen no names tossed around that i would be overly interested in more than Bo...

    Finally, I still think the ship is heading in the right direction... I have said this many times before but i honestly believe Bo's biggest mistake in coaching so far was the fact he got overconfident... look at his classes... with the success of 2009 and 2010 defenses it was like he concentrated so hard on getting an offense he just figured he could make a defense out of anyone... In all honesty i dont think he truly realized what he had on the roster 2008-2010 ...
    we are still doing it the "right way", we are keeping the academic all american tradition intact... and i think its obvious he has now realized he needs to get supreme athletes for his defense to work... just look at the last two classes...

  • Couldn't have said it better myself. What Bo really needs to do to get over the hump is figure out how to stop a mobile qb. All of our blow out losses last year and this year were to very mobile qb's. He got his defensive philosophies in the NFL where there are no mobile qb's. He did see some Tebow time while at LSU and corralled him pretty well, but Tebow is like a full back, not a mobile qb like Russell Wilson, Braxton, Colter, Robinson etc. If Bo figures it out, most of his probs are solved. When he had defensive success in the B12, again he faced no real mobile qb's except Griffin, but he didn't have running plays designed for him that figured prominently into the gameplan like Braxton and Robinson. Griffin was more of a scrambler and didn't have quite the supporting cast as in later years. Stopping the mobile qb is really his achilles heel. We were doing it pretty well in Q1 against OSU, and then stopped pressuring him. Also, Mich St. seems to have put out a pretty good blueprint on stopping the mobile qb. Bo needs to adjust and figure it out. Whenever we see a drop back qb, we do quite well. That in my opinion truly dials in on the bad losses in Bo's tenure. It's not that he can't beat good teams, it's good teams with mobile qb's. That's my .02

    I'm really struggling to stay in the pro-Bo camp. I was still in his corner after the ucla game, but am losing faith. That said, I don't see any sure fire home run replacement. It seems he has changed his philosophy in recruiting and it appears we have some good, young talent. So I guess another year or two is warranted barring a 5-6 loss season.

    Lets hope he figures it our because I doubt any of us want to really start all over again.

  • Good post...and I would like to wholeheartedly agree. I like Bo generally, and root for his success.

    But, this loss has left me with the recognition and the resignation that this program will not turn the corner as things currently stand with this coaching staff. It's not just Bo. I have reservations about our DC, OC, and offensive line coaching. As a unit, there are too many individual failings to overcome. I wish I felt differently. But, I think a change is inevitable. My hunch is new staff by 2014.

  • What a bunch of Crap.

    He was brought here to FIX the defense, we just gave up 63 points. His QB that he changed the whole Offense for just threw 3 picks, and melts down in Big Games. As far as recruiting his classes barely even fall in the top 25 range. His job didn't start in 2011, he started in 08. He needed to recruit from 08 on. With his rep in 09, and our money, support and facilities, it wasn't that hard for him to recruit.

    In a way I agree... if i were to pick his second biggest failure so far as a coach it would be staff management... when you continue to lose guys on the staff and continue to hire from within in a way you are putting blinders on your defensive mentality... basically new ideas are no longer brought up... when i look at this staff i see this: (damon benning touched on this today i believe) when they resume preparation for Northwestern on Wednesday i see Bo Pelini holding a defensive meeting and saying "anyone have any new ideas" or "has this type of problem happened to anyone, how did you handle it" ... and i picture... cricket 's ... not enough experience as much as I love Papuchis... i believe he was brought up too early... and last year was a real chance to bring in someone to help bounce ideas back and forth with Bo...

  • As much as this weekend stings I am also not ready to give up on Bo. Biggest reason: who replaces him?

    I think there are only a few guys we could MAYBE grab who would be better then Pelini. 2 would require a fortune and maybe wouldn't sign regardless.

    Love him or hate him, Bo Pelini is going to win 8 or 9 games this season and will be our best option for 2013.

  • Losses sting... that's for sure. But as you said, there is no "quick fix." there's no Urban Meyer out there ripe for the plucking. Some have mentioned Jim Tressell but with his show-cause action against him and all the baggage (i'm not willing to go through sanctions for wins) he brings it's a big fat NO to me.

    There are no other names that bring me excitement in replacing a guy like Bo. I'm not ready to have a coaching change and endure another 2004. That being said I also can't say I completely support Bo either, unless he figures something out and figures it out quick on defense we are in trouble.

    It's just crazy... we must be really lacking talent on defense because Bo's defenses in 2003, 09 and 10 were phenomenal and his defenses at Oklahoma and LSU were fantastic as well. I just can't believe he's lost his edge that quickly.

    I will say one thing though, I think he needs to reevaluate his practice methods... obviously they are not working. Create competition, create an edge and get physical.

  • I have no inside information whatsoever, but if this season doesn't end well, I could easily see him quitting the job, particularly if the new AD offers him a deal that leaves him financially well-fixed for the next couple of years.

    Bo really struggles with scrutiny and criticism. He will probably never be comfortable with the media, particularly in the role of a scape-goat. He is an amped-up guy and is very thin-skinned. I think he is solid mentally, but I do believe we got a warning sign in the game where he was carted off at the half. He looked really mentally defeated after the game with the Buckeyes.

    Personally, I think Bo is a high character person. From what I can gather he is a good leader for the kids on the team. The players are doing well in the classroom and he has developed a "family" atmosphere. He stresses character when he is recruiting players, and we seem to have some top-notch young men on the squad.

    I am not sure that anyone can get the job done at Nebraska anymore, except another "Osborne" or "Devaney". Sometimes I see a half or a quarter of football where we play great football, but we can't sustain it for a whole game against good opposition. I think where Bo and his staff fall short is making the "real" time adjustments to the situation on the field and avoiding the self-inflicted "unforced" errors. While I think it would be possible to get more out of the players we are fielding this season with better coaching, there are significant talent shortcomings on the D in particular that prevent us from competing at an elite level no matter who is coaching the team.

  • As a Buckeye, welcome to the B1G and depsite the loss this pass weekend, I hope those that made the trip enjoyed their experience.

    I have no dog in this hunt, but from an outsiders viewer, unless Bo wants out, has lost enthusiam, or you have a big name ready to come in, I think you have to stick it out.

    You are almost starting all over again anyway with recruiting by moving to the B1G with your recruiting base shifting too. The B1G states are Ohio, which Urban will own, but will be enough left over, and Pennsylvania which is now up for grabs, and Chicago. I assume the move from the B12 has affected your traditional recruiting bases in Texas and the like, but I could be wrong. Bo has the midwest connections, is making offers and inroads here in Ohio but it takes time. We also has some SEC connections from his LSU days. Unless you got someone big to replace him, I think you have to assume the conference change is like starting over anyway and give him another clean slate starting last year. When Penn St. came in, they didn't have to shift their traditional recruiting areas or playing styles. HIs players are also adjusting to playing styles too, which showed more last year and probably in the past. The new AD likely won't have much loyalty and will be quicker on the trigger.

    Just my two cents. Again, welcome to the B1G, best addition we could have had!
