The Bone Yard

I personally am a big fan of two, Ohio St. v Michigan, and Missouri v Kansas. It's really how fired up these fan bases get over a game that could have no meaning for either, could have one terrible team, and one top five team, or was just what would be considered another conference game.

To me its that fiery yearning to beat the living daylights out of someone who could live hours away, but likely, there's that guy/gal who works in the same office. They display the banner, always roots for their team, and that drives them up the wall.

I remember in 2010 when Nebraska played Missouri. (I think Roy Helu just scored another touchdown by the way) I wasn't going to shove it in my then-girlfriend's(a Missouri fan) face, but I had to remark how nice of a beatdown it was. It was no concern, as long as Missouri were to beat Kansas. In fact, if I remember right, they upset #1/2 Oklahoma the week before, and all her family was talking about was beating the snot out of the Jayhawks.

As a Kansas City guy, I really enjoyed Kansas/Missouri. Truly hilarious.

Never been to a game but the Iron Bowl is pretty heated.

Me? - Ali/Frazier.

Everyone remembers The Thrilla In Manila, but, the first one, in NYC, was called The Fight Of The Century or simply The Fight. A rare thing of beauty. Frazier won a unanimous decision.

The second fight..., not so much. But then came Manila. WhooWhee. The most incredibly punishing match I've ever seen. At the bell for the 15th round, Ali stood up, but, across the ring, Frazier sat - couldn't answer the bell.

For round after round through the middle of the fight, Frazier pummeled Ali. Punished him. Blow after blow after blow.

According to Ed Schuyler of Associated Press, who was present at ringside, during the sixth round, Frazier hit Ali with a left hook that Schuyler characterized as the hardest punch he had ever seen.

According to Schuyler, Ali's head turned back to Frazier and said to him, "They told me Joe Frazier was washed up", to which Frazier retorted, "They lied."__Wiki

Then came the last rounds. 12th - Ali. 13th - Ali. And the 14th...., holy crap what a round!

After the 14th...

Ali had walked back to his own corner after the 14th and instructed Dundee to cut his gloves off.

Ali's biographer, Thomas Hauser, later revealed that a member of Ali's corner had told him that Ali was telling them to "cut (my gloves) off, cut 'em off", indicating Ali's desire to not continue the fight. Ali's surprise is quite visible on the video of the fight once [Frazier's manager] threw in the towel for Frazier.

Ali later said that "Frazier quit just before I did. I didn't think I could fight any more."

In a SI story, after the fight, I read that late in the night, Frazier laid in his bed with his face swollen and bloated. From time to time he would rise up on his elbows and say, "Lawd! I hit him with punches that would knock a wall down!"

Four and a half years after the first fight. Nearly forty years ago now. Nearly forty years ago now. Seems like yesterday to me.

A few years ago my wife and I were bringing groceries in. She missed a step and went down in a heap.

The first words out of my mouth were not "Are you OK?". Nope, in my best Howard Cosell voice, I said "Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!"

She was fine, by the way, but less than pleased at my initial lack of concern. Sports does strange things to men's minds...
