Correct, in that the social culture could not care less about college football. Which, in turn, doesn't equate to the conversion of millions of viewers and a potential honey pot of money.

Take the Pinstripe Bowl for example ...“As of about an hour ago, we’ve sold approximately 40,000 tickets,” Levine said. “The capacity of the stadium for college football is 44,000; that is really good. It’s principally where we were last year.”

44,000/10,000,000 = .004 percent of the market. Yeah, that's really a base to build on ...NOT.

I don't believe this will happen however you are missing the point of why this expansion could make sense...I'm not for it but hey.

If the B1G could get footprint rates for MD, NJ, & part of NY the numbers could pencil out. From a fanbase/history perspective you are correct though.

For the B1G who can they legitimately target? ND? No. ACC schools? Perhaps non-tobacco road schools. UNC plus a VA or VA Tech would be valuable however it doesn't appear to be realistic.

From there where else could the B1G look? It is pretty much the big east or a Louisville type school.

It's good to be the King.

  • Not sure what you guys have been saying behind the paywall but IF UMD does come to the B1G, it appears like another team will join the party too because the conference isn't going to take just one team to give us 13. I'd venture to say the 14th team will be the likes of Rutgers. They have solid academics and do sound research which is the type of University the conference is looking for. Logistically it makes sense because it will ensure the B1G has it's footprint in the entire north east extending all the way out to the mid-west with you guys.

You basically just wrote the same thing that is in those VIP posts. Some like it, some don't.

  • I'm pretty surprised by how many people are dead set against this move. It's a no brainer if you ask me. The B1G will never compete with the built in recruiting advantages the SEC has. The only thing they can hope to match or beat them with is TV markets. Adding DC, Baltimore and to an extent NY/NJ is huge. Not to mention fertile recruiting grounds in NJ, DC, and Northern Va. Bigger recruiting areas and more TV money will only help in the long run. Delaney has shown he knows what he's doing. Expansion for the sake of expansion is not something the B1G is going to do.

It's not the money... it's the quality... Adding Maryland and Rutgers does nothing for the reputation of the conference but lower it.

Who would you want them to add? ND is not coming and same with Pitt. Iowa St would be on the same level as Rutgers IMO. West Virgina would make sense because of where they are but they just switched to the big 12. None of the teams in the SEC are going to leave and I highly doubt anyone out west would leave. I don't think Florida St makes sense because of where they are.

Rutgers football has a ton of potential because of all they talent they have. Maryland would be joining for their basketball team. My only thing is that is a long way to travel. Idk what our fan base is like on the east coast, but I have no desire to travel to New Jersey for a game.

  • I'm very intrigued and excited about the potential of this. I think Juke and Skerz summed it up perfectly.

why do you have to add anybody? the B1G already makes more money than any other conference... not sure that adding a team just to add a supposed "potential market" is the way to go. Travel for non-revenue sports has to be considered as well, and Rutgers is piss-poor at pretty much everything besides Football (and even then they are barely mediocre most years) and Maryland might be one of the worst ACC football teams out there, heck Duke is better.

Why add anyone? 12 teams is fine, the market is fine, they're not hurting for cash... and as for revenue... the ACC would barely lose anything market value wise at all losing Maryland and the Big East would be fine without Rutgers. They bring "potential" viewers to the table. I don't buy it.

I think they look awesome... I'm probably in the minority though

Think long term. This move, if it happens, would only help.

  • Rutgers doesn't belong in the Big 5 Conferences.

  • Something else to think about, and this may be way in left field, is the potential that Penn State is booted from the conference and Maryland would be their replacement.

Interesting. I haven't been paying the most attention to this, but I haven't really heard rumors as strong as the ones from Maryland for a second team. So this could be.

There is an extensive list of teams that shouldn't be in major conferences but are. Vandy, ISU and Kansas all come to mind. Maybe even Northwestern. Just to name a few.

The Penn State scandal certainly had to break some conference contract obligations. There were rumors of them being booted from the conference, but Delany probably didn't have the replacement team ready to take their place.

Could Maryland be that replacement? It is certainly interesting to think about.
