Another side of Taylor Martinez

  • Found the opening of this Jeremy Fowler piece to be pretty interesting.

Nebraska's Taylor Martinez creates apps, scores TDs -- but wants more - CBSSports.com

Nebraska's Taylor Martinez has a storied career in Lincoln, nearly 30 wins but no championship. The puzzle-solver who makes Iphone apps in his spare time wants late-November success now.

  • Well he may be good at selling apps, but selling Nebraska, facepalm_msu. Good read other than that line.

Yeah, an occasional PR nightmare. Excited to see if Nebraska takes him to Big Ten Media days.

  • Who do you think they take Mike?

Taylor, Spencer Long, i think for sure and i can't really think of someone from the defense

Maybe Quincey or Kenny Bell also

  • Thats a great recruiting tool, "there's not much to do in Nebraska."

Can we fast forward to 2014 please?

  • i don't understand why people have to read the negative here. People are focusing on one thing he said, and not even the whole quote. Makes my blood boil. The kid is working harder than most QBs do in the off season, he's constently trying to improve and heck yeah he has confidence... do you want a QB that doesn't?

Now I'm not a Martinez basher or apologist but the vitriol towards him is absurd. Yeah he's made mistakes and some dumb decisions as a QB, and I myself have yelled vehemently at the TV as he throws an INT or fumbles the ball, but the kid works hard and has taken us to two Conference Championship games, one of which the coaches were just asking him to fail after reagrivating that injury and leaving him in... and one where we forgot to actually field a defense.

This is the easiest schedule Martinez has ever had to work with, and the most talented offense he has had to work with as well. If our defense can be just 5 spots better we go 12-0 regular season next year.

  • Did anyone else download the app and feel equally disappointed? LoL. There are very, very few athletes whose personalities intrigue me and Martinez has always been one. I really wish I could have a cup of coffee with that guy and find out what that he is like. I've just heard so many stories it's hard to know what to believe.

If Taylor improves as much as he did between his sophomore and junior campaign there is no reason to believe he can't be a legit Heisman candidate.

There's no way in hell I see him playing anything in the NFL but kick returner tho.

I ain't mad. I thought it was a good article. Hell, Beck said more damaging things in that than anyone else here has stated. Praise and Condemnation go hand in hand. I give Taylor all the credit in the world for trying to improve his craft. I wish we had a team filled with his desire to improve. You will never see me bash him again. I'm over it, he's proved me wrong. My bash was on the quote saying Nebraska has nothing to do. It's a slap in the face to those who love this state and all of its hidden secrets and its a poor way to sell it to out of state recruits who have the question of what is there to do in Lincoln. We have one of the best music scenes in the country, the best upland and waterfowl hunting in the country, the cleanest water, the happiest city, one of the lowest unemployment rates, the college world series.......Rant over. I didn't like the quote.

honestly, that quote didn't bother me much. I've lived in Nebraska my whole life, I love it here. I love it Omaha, Kearney, Lincoln etc... but to a kid that comes from the West Coast who might not be into hunting or music there might not be much to do compared to Corona, CA. I don't think he was saying he doesn't like living here, or that the water is dirty or that it's hard to find a job... just that there's not the type of stuff he did in CA that he does here. Sure he can go to movies, go bowling, go to the bar, play video games, go to the college world series (assuming he cares about baseball) maybe go to a mall... That quote isn't going to cause a recruit to come here or not, plenty of other coaches and players are telling prospects that too.

I just don't think it's such an affront to our culture. Maybe I'm going soft.

  • Klein, I think people are just disappointed that we've got a senior quarterback -- arguably the face of the team with Rex gone -- and he's still making comments like this to media. I think most people, myself included, had just hoped he'd have a bit more finesse with the media by now.

he's gotten better but anyone who thought he would turn into a smoth talker over night was kidding themselves. He is who he is.

Nobody expected it over night... But he's coming into his fifth year. That's more than one or two nights to work on this.

They will probably take TM but don't they teach Public Speaking at NU? I would think that when you have a high profile guy like TM the coaching staff would work very hard getting him used to speaking in front of camera's.

Am I off base here? He needed to be groomed better and don't feel the staff really prepared him for the public eye. He's been in the public eye for 4 years.

There are probably worse atrocities going on with this team and their players. Martinez's social faux pas is likely the least of their worries.
