2013 Skerz being compared to the 1983 Skerz

  • I know there are a handful of you guys just can't wait to come into this thread, blow the doors down, "NO WAY CAN YOU COMPARE THESE 2 TEAMS lynchmob!!!", and whatever else may come up. But read the article and it is a bit eerily similar. You've got an explosive offense with what appears to be a Defense not quite as good. It's a very interesting quick read.

For some reason it won't attach the article so here it is....

I can see us in the mnc game this year if we can eliminate the turnovers. The path is eerily similar with a more talented offense now. We have the coaching and players to get the job done. I've never been wrong either, check my history. Cool find vamp. I'll give you an uv because I predict some dvs coming your way.

I see the parallels, but the big difference is relativity. They were coming of a #3 finish and 14 straight top-10 finishes in one of the polls. Questionable D by their high standards. Great O by their high standards. I'm definitely excited about this team, but in the end, we're comparing two teams with similar balance, but different talent levels. That said, I hope they prove me an underestimator!

  • There is no comparison between Martinez and Gill. Gill is the best QB to ever play for the Huskers. I love Abdullah, but he is a step down (at least at this point) from Rozier. Kenny Bell is as good or slightly better than Fryar. '83 was a much more solid team than this year's team will be, IMO.

  • The offensive line can only wish to be that dominant. Wow how can I even pretend not to laugh at this tread. But if we could have one individual not press in the passing game and throw the ball away we very well could have the best offense statistics of all time.

The comparison of '83 with '13 is premature but not unwarranted. Similarities exist but perhaps only at the surface level. We will see. I know the thought had occurred to me.

I definitely take MikeCaramba's point where he posted...

"...we're comparing two teams with similar balance, but different talent levels."

I also think Gill was the best QB we ever had.

I do disagree with you, westoak, where you say...

"Kenny Bell is as good or slightly better than Fryar."

Whoa! I mean Whoaaaa! Irvine Fryar was one of the best players ever to wear Husker gear. In any sport. Absolute elite talent. IMO, the best player on that team.

Wasn't he the number one draft pick that year? I think so.

Fair enough. I'll have a talk with Abdullah about this. biggrin

K9, Fair enough, JMO. 2 things about this. I'm comparing them as CFB players only, which we've discussed on this board many times doesn't really have much correlation to what the NFL does. I have great respect for Fryar and hold him in very high regard. Always a great representative of N when he was around. He might be our best receiver ever, although I personally would put him at #2 behind Johnny Rodgers. This is more a reflection of what I think of Bell. He is just that good IMO, and I expect he will have a long and distinguished NFL career as well.

Whoa there. Martinez, Abdullah and Bell are not in the same conversation as Gill, Rozier and Fryar. We can just stop right there. Fryar was the #1 overall pick in the NFL draft. Mike Rozier won the Heiman Trophy so to say Abdullah is a step down is a huge understatement. Turner Gill was also a Heisman finalist. The 83 teams talent level is far better with regard to these 3 -- it isn't close.

No worries. This is just something that happens on these boards. One guy makes an innocent remark expressing an opinion and another guy pops back disagreeing. Today I'm the pop-er, tomorrow I'll be the pop-ee. It's all good. biggrin

BTW, don't know what Fryar's doing these days but after the NFL he came back to Lincoln in search of his Doctorate Degree. Smart guy. Very smart.
