**** Game Thread: Penn State @ Nebraska ****

  • I really hate to say this, but I have an eerie feeling about todays game. Has a lot of that Northwestern feel to it like last year.

    We are coming off of an emotional and huge win over Michigan State team only to play a team we should beat at home as long as we show up and play at or near our potential.

    All 5 of our Big 10 games this year have put our team to the test. Really difficult to get up and play that many weeks in a row.

    All this talk of us controlling our own destiny, Big 10 Champions, and Rose Bowl have been starting to come out in the last week. We are far from even wrapping up the Legends division, and need to keep focused. We always seem to have that one clunker game every year that we all collectively shake our heads. Hopefully that is behind us now as this team has shown some special character the past 6 weeks. Unfortunately, a bad showing today could make all that hard work go to waste.

    100% agree with that, but we are 102nd in the country in TO margin while Penn State is 14th in the country.

    I believe we have won the TO battle all of 3 times this year, all against vastly inferior opponents.

    The wind gives me some concerns not only in the passing game but Special Teams as well. Thankfully Penn State is 118th in net punting and their kicker is well below average only converting on 7 of 14 field goals this year and has missed 2 PATs. Maybe Ameer can have a big impact on Special Teams for us today. toot

  • Hey if anyone is headed to the game from Omaha today please be careful a car rolled over and they will be bringing in life flight helicopter shortly... Near mile marker 420 I think

    A first timer returning punts in a huge game with winds upwards to 40 MPH? Doesn't sound like a good idea to me as it could easily backfire.

    I expect the wind to affect PSU a bit more than us, they rely on the passing game more.

    True to a point, but their QB has only thrown 3 INTs this year compared to our QB's 8 while throwing nearly 100 more passes.

    True, but PSU can't just shut down their passing game and go straight run the way we can.

    I'm not entirely sold that we can simply stuff their running game.

    Penn State will run it up between the tackles in a downhill running style. Something we have only seen a couple of times this year against Wisconsin and Michigan State. While we stepped up to the task against Wisconsin, we certainly didn't against Michigan State.

    We are rather small at DT and Penn State has some decent good sized people on the interior of their OL.

    I have little doubt that Penn State will test us between the tackles with a downhill running game today.

    While returning kicks and punts are similar, they are 2 completely different things.

    Fielding a kickoff is rather easy. Fielding a punt in traffic and with people breathing down your neck is an entirely different story.

  • Whoever the Huskers have fielding punts, I think they'll have firm instructions to let it bounce. Better to give up a few yards than a turnover, in these conditions.
