      • NU has a decision to make. With Urban Meyer now bringing his sleazy recruiting tactics to the B1G does the conference bend to the sleaze factor that has made the SEC the most dominant conference? Would NU ever take an approach like that? Alabama signs 25 in every class regardless. Would the B1G allow that now that Meyer is bringing these tactics to the B1G?

Big 10 won't allow it. It's got stricter rules than the SEC. You got to believe though that Meyer is going to toe that very line.

          • Diggs hurt for me... someone on this board told me that if I "ever thought we had a shot at him I was sorely mistaken." Whatever... I thought he was close to being "N" during the season but our staff didn't put enough out there to get him away from home.

            My others include:

            Marcus Rios
            Devian Shelton
            Nate Iese
            and obviously Andrus Peat

How we missed out on all our top HS secondary prospects i'll never understand. Raymond certainly has to do better.

Teams can't win every recruiting battle. Who were Nebraska's five biggest misses in the 2012 recruiting season?

Bullard has to be in this list in my opinion. For a team that is as starved for talent at DE as we are, that one hurts. McMullen is great, but one wasn't enough. And before anyone says Moss, he was a throw-in to get Peat. Sorry, but it's true. Maybe we'll get lucky there, but I wouldn't bank on it.

My list, in order would be:

                  1. Peat
                  2. Bullard
                  3. Diggs
                  4. Beaver/Shelton/Rios, had to get one
                  5. Fuller (and he's only on my list because I believe he would have ended up in the secondary).

                    Big Red Phoenix

                  • The sunnier side is that the staff is committed to recruiting these highly rated kids. I would rather have misses on 4 & 5* kids than not trying at all. I think a miss on a recruit is only on the kids in the 500 mile. You tell me that Rutgers has more of a football program to offer than Nebraska, if you believe QL chose Rutgers because of the football program I will think you are silly. These kids chose the school where they will play for 5 years for reasons that we cannot predict and it probably does not have anything to do with Nebraska football and the coaching staff.

Big red nailed it, thats exactly how my list would look.

Peat was a potential 3-4 year starter. Stanford signed what, six OL 4* or better in this class? How does that happen? Not getting Peat is the biggest loss we've had in years for multiple reasons.

Bullard is a beast and our DE depth will be the weakest position we have in 2013. Ankrah is the only one that has seen the field that would return, that leaves Vestal, Ashburn, Okuyemi and then Moss and McMullen. Losing on Bullard was huge.

Diggs, Beaver, Rios, Shelton, Ford.... How do we not get one off this list? We will graduate 5 CB seniors in 2013. Not only is there a lot of question marks about the talent beneath that group but whoever replaces them won't see much playing time to develop.
List includes Josh Mitchell, Braylon Heard, Charles Jackson. Heard is supposedly testing the waters with the DB's and Jackson still is yet to make it to campus.

Fuller I was disappointed with because his game tape is so electric. I don't know if I would want to see him play DB. After watching some of Armstrongs film and how the coaches feel about him I think we are fine with him.

How do you know this? How do you know what were the conversations betwen the coaching staff and Diggs?

Maybe we should have offered his mother a job?

Mike, I love HI. The staff is excellent and the writing is superb, but I do not like articles like this, because it gives a certain element in the fan base tacit permission to attack the coaching staff.

As evidenced by the ludicrous post misscarlet made. In many cases it feels as if they are openly praying that the team goes belly up and loses more than it wins.

The better question is how do you NOT know this?

Did Diggs come here? No. So obviously, the staff didn't do enough to get him to come here. Pretty simple stuff.

If you want to argue that it was impossible, that's fine. But that's not what was said.

                            • I honestly don't know what miscarlet85 was thinking when she posted such an asinine statement. Coach Pelini will be the head coach as long as he wants to be because he's improving the program. He inherited a mess and has done a very good job turning the program around. Now, to the topic at hand. Nebraska has a tough enough time bringing in top notch recruits due to the cold winter weather in Lincoln but as one person commented, I'd rather miss out on 5 star recruits than to not recruit them guys at all. We will win our fair share of football games and we will win on national television. It's just a matter of time. Winning those games will bring in better recruits. Just be patient. Things are getting better.

                              • DA +1. Recruiting is not an easy task. It is a challenge to attract kids to Lincoln. It's not impossible, but it does take some work. How many folks on this board are alumns or current students? I went to MS & HS in Neb, but elected to go to college in SC. I'm a proud Husker fan even though I did not attend or graduate from there (I'd be honored to have a degree from UNL.

In a previous job, I recruited for my alma mater. Kids are looking for so many different things. Nebraska has many positives (the people, fans, tradition, facilities, Lincoln & Omaha and academics). Challenges...winter, Lincoln (it won't appeal to everyone just like NYC or other locations), distance (depending where you live...can I get there easily). Nebraska will wow some (love Westerkamp's quote about ND..."it's not Nebraska.") and underwhelm others.

I like the approach the coaches take with the recruits. They don't promise anything, but set expectations. Several recruits, parents and coaches have given the staff positive feedback on how they conduct themselves. I hope they can improve their closing skills as it seemed there may have been some opportunities missed, but since I/we are not privy to those interactions it's difficult to criticize with any conviction. I am pleased that they are going to makes some changes to their strategy (working DFW).

Let's hope the coaches develop the players and the players put in the work to improve. I'm happy with who we have and over who we didn't get. I support the players that are N!

                                GBR!

                                  HM:

Kourtizdis - Garrison & staff wanted desperately.

Foster - Staff wanted him in worst way possible.

Johnson - Playmaking DE with tremendous upside.

All in all, staff got beat up very badly and it's showing with an extremely sub-par recruiting class.

The kids that Urban brought in were either 1) ohio kids who were swayed by the potential of penalties & or negative recruiting to begin with or 2) made it known to Meyer their interests in becoming Buckeye's. Please have a better understanding of the truth before making such derogatory statements ;)

On the opposite side. Any hope some of these losses light a fire under the staff to pick it up.

Exactly. Which means if we'd like to be relevent again someday our staff had better start making some changes in their recruiting strategy. Start getting some commits on Sundays during the season. People act like all these kids who commit during their visit are gonna decommit down the road. Yes, there's a chance that could happen. Fact of the matter is most of these kids will stay committed to their first school of choice.

Either change with the times or fall behind. Its one of the basic rules of society. Ya know, Minnesota used to be held in pretty high regards around the college football world too.

What do you think Osbourn would be doing?Actuallly going to get mad cause another coach called a committed recruit? Until a player signs on the dotted line and sends it in he can choose to go wherever he wants. Time to man up cause now a big boy is in your neighborhood. Hope Wisconsin realize what big cry babies they look like and what an embarassment their whinny coach appears to be.

                                                  GBR!

                                                  My thoughts exactly.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I can only imagine the level of vitriol sent Pelini's direction if he were to pressure kids into committing, only to have them change their minds on signing day, or the month before that.

I think this staff likes to feel secure about a commit before they accept their commitment. Far fewer problems in early February that way.
